2019–20 Training Opportunities
On behalf of the California Department of Education, Educational Testing Service and the Sacramento County Office of Education host a variety of workshops and professional development opportunities each year. Trainings are held at various locations throughout California and several trainings are also broadcast as live-streamed webinars. Training opportunities are available for both CAASPP and ELPAC coordinators as well as Classroom Educators.

Training Opportunities for CAASPP and ELPAC Coordinators
July 2019: New Coordinator Webinar
This webinar, hosted by the Sacramento County Office of Education, provides information about the following:
- The training opportunities that are available for new coordinators
- The various assessments included California’s assessment system
- Coordinator checklist and where to find more information to help you in your new role, as well as existing resources that you can share with your administrators and teachers.

August 2019: New ELPAC Coordinator Training
The New ELPAC Coordinator Training is a voluntary training session designed for the person who manages the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) testing process for their local educational agency (LEA) and is new to their role. This training session will:
- familiarize new coordinators with the Initial and Summative ELPAC processes,
- explain the responsibilities of the ELPAC coordinator,
- offer suggested time frames for completing activities, and
- explore procedures and practices to support a successful ELPAC administration.
Audience: LEA ELPAC coordinators who have been in their role for less than 12 months

September 2019: New Coordinator Webinar
This webinar, hosted by the Sacramento County Office of Education, provides information about the following:

September 2019: Preparing Technology for Online Testing
Educational Testing Service (ETS), on behalf of the California Department of Education, will present a webcast that includes information about preparing your local educational agency’s (LEA’s) technology for the 2019–20 CAASPP online testing, the October 2019 ELPAC computer-based field test, and the computer-based Summative ELPAC beginning February 1, 2020.

This workshop will demonstrate how to use data to advance English language proficiency through high-leverage instructional sequences. Participants will use a protocol linking two of the more difficult ELPAC task types to robust classroom instruction which can be used to create ELPAC-like assessments in context. Video clips, student work, and reflections from the implementation of these practices with English learners will be shared.

November 2019: California Educational Research Association (CERA) Conference Pre-Session
The CDE will host a four-hour interactive pre-session at CERA to explore its improved data reporting systems, including the California School Dashboard.

December 2019: ELPAC Pretest Webcast
In preparation for the administration of the computed-based Summative ELPAC, ETS will host a webcast a month prior to the January Pretest Workshops to provide LEA ELPAC Coordinators with information they need to train their ELPAC Site Coordinators and Test Examiners.

March 2020: Assessment Updates Webinar
Hosted by the CDE, this webinar for all LEA coordinators will provide the latest updates for the spring summative test administration for the CAASPP and ELPAC.

Registration: With the cancellation of school for so many districts across the state, the California Department of Education has decided to postpone the March webinar.
April 2020: CDE Update to All Coordinators
This webinar is designed for assessment, accountability, and Dashboard coordinators to provide them with updates on Governor Newsom’s executive orders and the recently approved federal waiver under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Staff from three CDE divisions—Assessment Development and Administration; Analysis, Measurement, and Accountability Reporting; and Improvement and Accountability—will discuss how the executive orders and federal waiver impact assessment, accountability, the California System of Support, and the Local Control and Accountability Plan development process, reporting requirements, and submission timelines. The webinar also will include an interactive question-and-answer session.

June 2020: WebEx for CALPADS and ELPAC Coordinators
CALPADS is a longitudinal data system used to maintain individual-level data including the English Language Acquisition Status field used to administer the Initial and Summative ELPAC. This 1-hour webinar will help LEA ELPAC and CALPADS Coordinators better understand the start-to-finish process of language designation. It will cover how to navigate the language fields of CALPADS, resulting in more timely and accurate lists of students who need to take the ELPAC.

The webcast will include details about 2019–2020 student score reports, data, and how to access and use ELPAC results, impacts to 2020–2021 ELPAC testing, and an introduction to the Alternate ELPAC.

Training Opportunities for Classroom Educators
July/August 2019: Summer Institute
The Summer Institute 2019 is a two-day, in-person, professional development opportunity titled “Analyzing Student Work and Using the Interim and Digital Library Systems to Inform Teaching and Learning.” The Summer Institute is for classroom teachers, instructional coaches, and teachers on special assignment in kindergarten through grade twelve looking to understand how different types of assessment work together to support student learning. Participants will be trained on analysis and hand scoring of student work in order to help improve teaching and learning. However, administrators also may find this training useful to inform their support of classroom teachers. You may want to print and display the workshop flyer to advertise this training opportunity.
