Dear California Educator:

The California Department of Education invites you to attend the 2022 Interim and Formative Assessment Training Series. Registration for the fall sessions is now available on the Interim and Formative Assessment Training Series registration web page. Fall sessions are a repeat of the same content from the summer sessions.

This engaging training series provides direct, online training focused on leveraging the interim and formative components of the Smarter Balanced comprehensive system of assessments to inform teaching and learning. It is designed for teachers, instructional coaches, and educators on special assignment, but local educational agency California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) and English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) coordinators and administrators may also find this training series useful to support local educators.

The 2022 Interim and Formative Assessment Training Series consists of three distinct, independent modules with multiple opportunities to attend. Modules 1 and 2 will be recorded for later viewing.

Module 1: Using the Formative Assessment Process and Tools for Teachers Website to Boost Instruction

• What: Deep dive into formative assessment practices and resources, including an exploration of the Tools for Teachers website
• When: 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. on the following dates:
  • September 20, 2022
  • September 27, 2022

Module 2: Gauging Student Progress with the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments and Related Online Systems

• What: Deep dive into the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments and associated online systems and how to use these resources to support teaching and learning
• When: 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. on the following dates:
  • September 21, 2022
  • September 28, 2022

Module 3: Interim Assessment Hand Scoring

• What: In-depth instruction and practice in hand scoring for Smarter Balanced English language arts/literacy (ELA) or Smarter Balanced mathematics performance tasks and constructed-response items, including reflection on implications for teaching and learning
• 3A—Interim Assessment Hand Scoring for ELA
  • When: 9 a.m. to noon on the following dates:
    • October 4, 2022
    • October 11, 2022
• 3B—Interim Assessment Hand Scoring for Mathematics
  • When: 9 a.m. to noon on the following dates:
    • October 5, 2022
    • October 12, 2022
