CAASPP and ELPAC—Lexile and Quantile Measures Reports and Toolkit Information
CAASPP and ELPAC email update, July 26, 2021.
Dear LEA CAASPP Coordinator or LEA ELPAC Coordinator:
Lexile® and Quantile® Measures Reports are available for the 2020–21 school year. Students who took the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics will also have a Lexile and Quantile Measures Report available.
Lexile and Quantile Measures
The Lexile and Quantile Frameworks measure students' ability in both reading (Lexile measure) and mathematics (Quantile measure). These measures help teachers and families find texts and materials for students that are appropriately challenging. In California, Smarter Balanced scores are used to determine a student's Lexile and Quantile measures.
Distributing Lexile and Quantile Measures Reports
Local educational agencies (LEAs) are not required to distribute Lexile and Quantile Measures Reports to parents and guardians. You may determine locally whether to distribute these additional reports. An example report is available on the CAASPP Student Score Reports (SSRs) webpage.
The Lexile and Quantile Measures Report is available only for students who received scores on one or both of the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for ELA and mathematics.
Lexile and Quantile Measures Reports will be available in the Test Operations Management System along with the other score reports. They can be printed or distributed electronically. If necessary, contact your LEA's student information system (SIS) vendor to request this new report be pulled for the LEA. The SIS vendor should refer to the ETS ESSR API Specifications web document for additional details.
Lexile and Quantile Communication Toolkit
A Lexile and Quantile Communication Toolkit with resources on communicating with parents and guardians is now available. The Communication Toolkit includes materials to help parents and guardians understand the Lexile and Quantile measures and navigate the tools available. The kit includes a parent/guardian letter template, a Lexile & Quantile Hub Quick Reference Guide, and more.
To access the Lexile and Quantile Communication Toolkit, as well as more information regarding Lexile and Quantile resources and upcoming training opportunities, please visit the Lexile® and Quantile® Measures web page .
