This communication includes information about the Initial, Summative, Initial Alternate, and Summative Alternate ELPAC.
Reminders
2023–24 Administration: Teacher Hand Scoring System Update
The Teacher Hand Scoring System (THSS) will be enhanced for the 2023–24 test administration year. Updates include improved navigation and communication features. The enhanced THSS will be used to enter scores for the Initial ELPAC, Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments for English language arts/literacy and mathematics, and the interim assessments for the California Science Test and ELPAC (once they are available in October 2023).
For the ELPAC, the THSS will be available after the July downtime, on July 5.
Upcoming Dates
June 9: 2022–23 Initial ELPAC Supplemental Ordering Window for K–2 Writing Answer Books and Braille and Large Print Test Materials Closing
The 2022–23 Initial ELPAC supplemental ordering window for K–2 Writing Answer Books and braille and large print test materials (delivered 10 to 14 days after the order has been placed) will close June 9.
June 16: Final Date to Return Summative ELPAC K–2 Writing Answer Books
The final date to request a pickup of completed K–2 Writing Answer Books for returning to ETS for scoring is June 16, 2023. For a list of all pickup dates, please refer to the List of Key Dates table.
June 30: 2022–23 Initial ELPAC and Initial Alternate ELPAC Testing Window Closing
The 2022–23 Initial ELPAC and Initial Alternate ELPAC testing window will close on June 30, 2023. Ensure all tests for the Initial Alternate ELPAC are completed and all domain, DEI, and THSS scores for the Initial ELPAC are submitted for each student before the close of the testing window. All Security and Test Administration Incident Reporting System (STAIRS) cases must be submitted one week before June 30 to ensure that cases are approved with adequate time to allow students to complete testing by June 30.

June (Various Dates and Times): New ELPAC Coordinator Training
Held by our county office of education (COE) partners, the first ELPAC coordinator full-day training is designed for ELPAC coordinators who are new to their role or want a refresher. These trainings will happen at COEs across California. Visit the ELPAC Upcoming Training Opportunities web page for more information, including dates and times, as well as links to register by COE.
June 6: CAASPP and ELPAC Reporting Results Webinar, 1:30–3 p.m.
On behalf of the California Department of Education, ETS will provide updated information about what data is available from the 2022–23 test administration, how it is reported, how to access results, and what the intended uses are for this assessment data.
This webinar is designed to provide attendees with the information needed to make use of the CAASPP, Summative ELPAC, and Summative Alternate ELPAC results at their respective LEA and school sites. Apply Now for Fall Educator Opportunities Meetings
These meetings are for educators who want to be involved in the development and review of test questions for California assessment programs. Some upcoming opportunities include the Item Writer Workshops, during which educators receive training on how to write assessment items. Item Writer Workshops for both the ELPAC and the Alternate ELPAC will be held in the afternoons on the following dates:
- ELPAC Item Writer Workshop—September 12–14 and 19–21, 2023.
- Alternate ELPAC Item Writer Workshop—October 17, 18, 24, and 26, 2023.

Ongoing Reminders
SSR Electronic Distribution
Ensure SSRs are populated in the student information system for the correct students in a timely manner, as outlined in the Options for Distributing SSRs chapter of the forthcoming ELPAC Scoring and Reporting Guide. Ensure that the SSRs are properly displayed, that parents and guardians can access the SSRs, and that they can access only the scores for their own children.
Scoring Job Opportunities
ETS accepts applications for scorers. This is an excellent opportunity for educators to become more familiar with the new generation of California assessments. Scoring schedules are flexible and can include four-, six-, and eight-hour weekday or weekend shifts. California educators interested in applying can view more information on the Online Scoring web page. Questions about the application or hiring process should be directed to etsrater@ets.org
