Now Available: Asynchronous Learning Modules for Hand Scoring Interim Assessment Performance Tasks
ELPAC email update, January 24, 2023.
Dear California Educator:
On behalf of the California Department of Education, ETS is pleased to announce the availability of asynchronous learning modules which guide educators on how to hand score the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessment performance tasks for English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and mathematics. The new asynchronous learning modules can be accessed on the following web pages:
- Asynchronous Learning Module: Hand Scoring ELA Performance Tasks
- Asynchronous Learning Module: Hand Scoring Mathematics Performance Tasks
These learning modules can be completed at any time, individually or as part of a professional learning community. There is no secure content on these web pages, but access to secure materials, including training guides and exemplars, is necessary to engage with the learning modules. Instructions are provided which guide teachers and other local educational agency staff in accessing secure materials for hand scoring through the Test Operations Management System (TOMS).
Understanding how to hand score performance tasks is an important part of preparing to use the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments, as hand scoring these interim assessments is a local responsibility. In addition, the careful analysis of student work on performance tasks can offer teachers valuable insight into student learning as it relates to the Common Core State Standards for ELA and mathematics.
These new learning modules include content similar to (though streamlined for online learning) the Interim and Formative Assessment Training Series hand scoring sessions that are offered each year in the summer and fall. If you want to complete these asynchronous training modules, but do not have access to TOMS, please contact a testing coordinator at your school site or local educational agency.
